As usual, I completely agree with "Ask a Manager" and offer a couple of additional thoughts.

First, having a great work environment where people enjoy working together AND are productive is organizational Nirvana. I have managed work groups where the banter among the team was ongoing AND where those teams were lights-out productive. It is one thing when the warm atmosphere fosters productivity and quite another when the social aspects extend into lengthy OUTSIDE phone calls, text messages etc.

Second, I really believe that there is a distinct possibility that this group will try to negotiate expectations around personal calls, banter, etc. Given the description of this situation, I think that the manager needs to communicate these expectations as non-negotiable and deal swiftly and severely with those who choose to persist in the unacceptable behaviors.DrJohnDrozdalhttp://workingwithtwentysomethings.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5558939360732260529.post-22809964904286026392009-07-12T16:59:38.774-04:002009-07-12T16:59:38.774-04:00This is a great article and wonderful advise for n...This is a great article and wonderful advise for new managers.
